A Colourful Reinterpretation of an Iconic Surrealist Portrait
The Son of Man Ceramic Vase from the Magritte Collection by Leti Ceramics is a handmade sculptural vase inspired by René Magritte’s iconic bowler-hatted figure. A vivid red apple conceals the face, creating a familiar yet mysterious composition where portraiture, nature and imagination meet.
The traditional dark suit is reimagined as a richly painted pale blue jacket covered with branches, leaves and small red fruit. A deep green bowler hat, olive-toned shirt, violet tie and reflective gold accents complete the colourful interpretation.
Hand-formed in semi-porcelain and painted entirely by hand, the vase works as both a functional flower vessel and a collectible ceramic art object.
Form & Iconic Composition
The upright figure gives the vase a balanced sculptural silhouette, while the projecting apple becomes its central visual element. The modelled leaves connect the fruit to the brim of the bowler hat, uniting the different parts of the composition.
Viewed from the side, the facial profile and dimensional botanical details become more visible. The hidden face preserves the sense of mystery associated with Magritte’s visual language.

Crafted from high-fired semi-porcelain, the vase combines structural strength with a smooth decorative surface. The facial features, bowler hat, apple and leaves are formed and finished by hand.
The botanical design is created with underglaze painting, studio glazes and metallic detailing. During kiln firing, the colours develop tonal variation and depth that cannot be reproduced through mass production.
